Department of Education confirms new location and date for high school

One of the Sunshine Coast’s fastest growing suburbs will soon have a new high school catering to more than 1500 students at full capacity.

Queensland education to receive major boost in Tuesday's state budget

One of the Sunshine Coast’s fastest growing suburbs will soon have a new high school, the Department of Education has confirmed.

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick said during Tuesday’s budget announcement that a secondary school would open at Palmview in 2023.

A department spokesman said the school would open to Years 7 and 8 students in 2023 and once fully operational, it would provide an enrolment capacity for more than 1500 students.

The department’s growth forecasts from the Palmview area show the suburb is expected to be home to about 3000 school-aged children.

He said the planned school would share a site with new state primary school and special schools which opened this year.

“The combined site is 17ha with approximately 8.5ha being allocated for the new secondary school set to open in 2023,” he said.

The spokesman said operational matters including the catchment for the new secondary school and feeder primary schools would be determined, in consultation with surrounding schools, in mid-2022.

Sunshine Coast Council has previously said the area for which the schools are catering allows for more than 16,000 people in 7000 homes.

It comes after Avid Property Group has reported major demand for blocks of land at its Harmony Estate in Palmview.

The State Government also opened a $127.5 million high school at Baringa earlier this year.
