A Victorian developer will start work on a gated community on a parcel of Sunshine Coast beachside land that was at the heart of an eight-year court battle.

The Dennis Family Corporation is preparing to start construction of a residential gated community at Yaroomba Beach after a sale settled on the 18.5ha beachside site last month.

Director Grant Dennis said the family-owned residential developer was committed to delivering a strong outcome for the Yaroomba community.

“This site has been earmarked for development for a decade or more and we are eager to begin work,” Mr Dennis said.

He said the developer would create a residential gated community including detached houses, terrace homes and apartments, in accordance with the existing 2007 Coolum Hyatt development approval, as a continuation of the Coolum Beachside Community Title Scheme.

The developer bought the land from Japanese firm Sekisui House.

Sekisui House, along with the Sunshine Coast Council, was engaged in a legal battle with community groups in the Planning and Environment and Supreme Courts over its plans for a $900m development on the site.

Community group Development Watch withdrew its Supreme Court appeal over Sekisui House’s plans for the site, following the sale.

Dennis Family Corporation is preparing to start early works on the site and will fence it because of workplace health and safety obligations.

The community will retain beach access from the Yaroomba Meeting Place at the northern end of the site through to beach access 91, while all construction access will be via an existing entry off David Low Way.

Development Watch president Lynette Saxton said even though the approval was granted in 2007, it was a “generous” approval at the time.

“It’s a fairly appropriate development for the site now and a much better outcome,” she said.

“We thank the Dennis Family Corporation for what we think is doing the right thing.”

The president said the community group, along with other groups, had requested a meeting with the developer.

The Sunshine Coast Environment Council liaison and advocacy officer Narelle McCarthy said any development still needed to respect the environment, marine turtles, the community and amenity.

“It’s welcome and far preferable to the inappropriate and contentious Sekisui approval,” she said.

“We look forward to working with the community and the Dennis (Family) Corporation.”
