The David Low Way near Castways Beach could be open within seven days with Noosa Council starting around the clock work today.
The road was closed to traffic late on Friday due to the collapse of a pedestrian underpass as a result of heavy rainfall and flooding in the local area.
The collapse occurred during a period of unprecedented and record breaking rainfalls in and around Noosa, Works Director, Alan Sheridan said.
Following an assessment on Saturday and the positioning of equipment over the weekend, Noosa Council commenced the repair work on the road today.
The work will involve reconstruction of the damaged underpass and road, which has been severely undermined by overland flow of water from the surrounding area.
“Operations will be ongoing around the clock until the road is open to traffic. We expect the road to be open within seven days,'' Mr Sheridan said.
"Work on the site will continue for at least the next month, but the priority at this time is to restore the underpass and reconstruct the road so that traffic can use it.”
“The work will be undertaken by Noosa Council and sub-contractors employed by council.
"Noosa has a professional experienced and dedicated workforce, which is more than capable of reconstructing the road as quickly as is humanly possible.
"Following a road collapse on Noosa Drive in 2005, council had the road open to traffic within a week, despite estimates of a three to four week road closure. We are confident of a similar result this time around,'' Mr Sheridan said.
Anyone wishing to travel North to Sunshine Beach or Noosa Heads will need to use the Sunshine Motorway, Walter Hay Drive or Eumundi Noosa Road and Eenie Creek Road as David Low Way is closed to all traffic at the location of the collapse.
Likewise, anyone wishing to travel South needs to avoid David Low Way and use the alternative route as indicated.
Police are also today asking Sunshine Coast residents to please be aware that Beckmans Road, Tewantin is closed to all traffic.
Anyone wishing to travel between Tewantin and Noosaville are advised they will need to use Sunrise Road, onto Wust Road, to Beddington Road then onto Eumundi-Noosa Road.
Police thank motorists for their patience as traffic congestion may be experienced along the alternate route. The road closure is only expected to be in force this morning.
