Big surf eroding Sunshine Coast beaches

Reports of damaging winds and more big surf should be expected over the coming days, as forecasters say the weather on the Sunshine Coast will be ‘quite substantial’.

Rain and strong winds are still to be expected after parts of the region received between 50-80mm of rainfall across New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

“The rain won’t be anything like it was over the past few days but the main issue now is the increase of those southerly winds and the dangerous swell conditions,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Felim Hanniffy told the Daily.

“We are looking at some gales to develop offshore during later today and on Monday so it is going to be very windy out on the water.

“There is potential of a severe weather warning to be issued for damaging winds.”

The large surf conditions and erosion is also expected to hang around until Tuesday, January 4.

“The combination of that swell and the abnormally high tides create dangerous surf conditions,” he said.

“It will be quite a powerful swell of up to four metres offshore but even onshore there’s potential of 2-3m waves.

“Because the tides are already pre-elevated it allows more water for that powerful swell to get right up onto the Coast.”
