Council adds teeth to dangerous dog monitoring

New data has exposed the failings of the Coast’s dangerous dog owners, with more than 30 under strict regulations due to attacks on people.

Sunshine Coast Council figures show 75 per cent of owners of regulated dogs are complying with conditions of keeping their pets.

Sunshine Coast Council currently has 96 regulated dogs on its books.

About 64 of those dogs are regulated due to attacks on other animals and 32 due to attacks on people.

A report due for discussion at Thursday's council meeting showed current regulations allowed the council to undertake inspections on the anniversary date of a dog declaration being made.

It proposed that from November 1, regulations be implemented to allow inspections to be spread across the year.

"This approach will also allow officers to focus on building relationships with regulated dog

owners to assist them in ensuring their dogs are kept according to the mandated conditions," the report read.

The program will cost about $36,000 to be funded through registration fees collected from regulated dog owners.

It comes after a the most recent review of the program showed 75 per cent of owners inspected between October last year and the end of January complied with their conditions.

It found 12 owners had to adjust how they contained their dogs to meet regulation and one owner surrendered their dog as they could not comply with conditions.

Three owners were fined a total of $2802 for failing to meet conditions.

Councillors are due to debate and decide on the proposal on Thursday.
