Team doing thousands of push-ups for mental health

Voluntarily doing thousands of push-ups may sound like a nightmare for many, but it's nothing compared to what Katheryn Kemp has seen people go through.

VOLUNTARILY doing thousands of push-ups may sound like a nightmare for many, but it's nothing compared to what Katheryn Kemp has seen people go through.

"I haven't personally been impacted by mental health issues, but I've had close friends and family that have been affected," she said.

"You see the impact on those left behind. If you can help contribute to saving not only one life, but helping the ricochet effect not happen, it's so important to do so."

That is why Ms Kemp has rallied her Strike Holey Moley Maroochydore co-workers to join the headspace Push Up Challenge this month.

The exhausting task will see the team complete 3128 push-ups over 21 days, representing the number of lives lost in Australia due to suicide in 2017, to raise funds for the support service.

The assistant venue manager said it was important to her to create a comfortable workplace for her staff in terms of mental health awareness.

"We have quite a young workforce, and you see stress and the expectations of society affect so many young people nowadays," she said.

"Although it's talked about more, people still hide it. Making that work environment where they can see you're there to support them is great."

Headspace Maroochydore community youth and engagement officer Jacinta Hesse said it was great to see the community come together for one cause.

"Hopefully the figure of 3128 stands out in people's minds," she said. "It's quite an alarming amount of people, so the more we can help advocate around that the better."

Head to the Maroochy Smoochies on the Push-Up Challenge website to donate to the team.
