The life of beloved Bruce Highway crash victim Nathan Weckert will be celebrated at Sunshine Coast Stadium, his family have confirmed.
The popular footballer, 17, was killed in a roadside tragedy at Palmview on Monday, August 30.
His death sent shockwaves through the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and his many social circles.
Nathan’s mother Shannon Dodson said her son would be farewelled in style with a celebration at the Bokarina stadium, followed by a “party” at the Buderim Wanderers Football Club.
Mrs Dodson said the stadium was the only venue fitting enough to celebrate her son’s life.
“I have no clue how many people will come but it’s the only place that would have worked,” Mrs Dodson said.
“Nathan played there a lot and it’s the only place that is fitting. I think it will be massive.
“We thought about having it at one of his clubs but that’s still not big enough.”
Nathan’s death came weeks before he was due to graduate from Chancellor State College and attend his school formal.
Mrs Dodson insisted the day would be a celebration.
“We aren’t doing a funeral or a wake,” she said.
“Absolutely it’s a celebration.”
Mrs Dodson said the day would be livestreamed with details to be provided later this week.
Nathan left behind parents Shannon Dodson and Jason Weckert, siblings Corey, Jordyn and Ryan and three-month-old niece Harper.
Mrs Dodson last week described Nathan in a touching tribute as a simple kid who did not need possessions to be happy.
“He just loved his life. He loved his family, his football, his friends. He asked for nothing but gave everything, right literally until the last minute,” she said.
“He was an extremely fun child. Never angry. And there was nothing he couldn’t do.”
A statement from police said Nathan had been travelling north on the highway when his car was understood to have hit a guardrail.
The police statement said Nathan had exited his vehicle and was waiting for help in the emergency stopping lane when another northbound car allegedly collided with him about 8pm.
The memorial is on Monday, September 13, at 11am.
