A Sunshine Coast boy with what could be the region’s best mullet has decided to chop off his beloved locks for charity.

Kody Heyer, 11, has loved having a mullet since he came home from his dad’s house with one two years ago.

“I really wanted to try something new,” Kody said about deciding to go for a mullet.

Mum Caroline Tyler said Kody “really loved” his mullet, which she estimated had grown to at least 20cm down his back.

After being told he wouldn’t be allowed to keep his mullet when he went to high school next year, Kody decided to chop it off to raise money for a cause close to his heart.

Kody said he loved his mullet which he has been growing out for two years.

“There are way too many homeless people on the Coast,” Kody said.

“I’d like to help out in some small way.

“Everyone has the right to feel safe and being homeless quite often means they are not.”

Kody has decided to donate the proceeds of his fundraiser to Aus Living Support, a charity which supports people without a home or those at risk of becoming homeless across the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie.

Ms Tyler said she was proud of Kody for wanting to help those in need after he had heard about and experienced the rental crisis facing the Sunshine Coast.

“Our rental got sold and I was panicking and he saw that,” she said.

“He’s been listening to the news or the radio and stuff like that about how desperate it is.”

She said her son had seen a few friends struggle to find rental properties.

“So many are going to desperate measures, camping, couch surfing, squeezing into small downstairs areas,” she said.

“(So for) anyone at his age, and with autism and ADHD as Kody has, to recognise what’s going on in his community ... I’m very proud.”

Ms Tyler said the “big chop” was happening on August 24 and they were looking into how they could also donate his hair afterwards.

Within four hours Kody raised $158, beating the goal he set for himself of raising $100, but he is hoping he can raise even more by the end of the month.

“Everyone’s super proud of him,” Ms Tyler said.

Kody has even inspired his 10-year-old sister to grow her hair out.

“She’s very proud of him, she’s seen how far he’s come with everything and now she says ‘I want to cut my hair off for something too’,” Ms Tyler said.
