A winemaker with strong links to the Coast will revisit his roots while helping less fortunate children at an upcoming charity event.

Sam Coverdale lives at his successful Polperro Winery in the rolling hills of the Mornington Peninsula but he still calls the Sunshine Coast home.

Mr Coverdale grew up in Buderim, went to school at Matthew Flinders Anglican College and played for the Maroochydore Swans.

He said he loved his childhood on the Coast and wanted to give back to kids who weren't as privileged as him by donating his wine to a SunnyKids charity event.

"I had such a good childhood and great opportunities afforded to me growing up on the Sunshine Coast and any charity that looks after young kids, especially when they've come from tougher backgrounds, is something I want to get behind," Mr Coverdale said.

"I just want to be able to afford them the same opportunities that I had growing up."

Mr Coverdale said he made unique and creative wines that he loved to drink, rather than making them for any particular market or critic.

"To be honest, if I was to say what my personal favourite wine is it would be chardonnay, especially ones from the Mornington Peninsula," Mr Coverdale said.

"The pinot noir's obviously get the top headlines from where we are, but the chardonnay is the unsung hero and they're such an enjoyable wine to make."

Mr Polperro will represent his vineyard at the Travis Schultz Winemakers Master Class on May 28 at the Maroochy RSL.

The event will aim to raise $150,000 for SunnyKids.
