Cooroibah Airbnb ‘party house’ has residents furious

Residents in a quiet Noosa hinterland street are fed up with a neighbouring property, regularly being used for “outdoor music festivals”. And neither the police nor the council are able to stop it.

Residents in a Noosa hinterland community are fed up with a neighbouring property regularly being used for what has been described as “outdoor music festivals”.

Up to 33 cars, tents and motorhomes were seen at the Amaroo Place property in Cooroibah during just one weekend in September, according to neighbours.

Police attended the property after receiving noise complaints 12 times since April 12, including four times in one night on September 4.

The council has confirmed the property had no permission for short-term letting and the owner had been informed the parties were prohibited on the large block.

Neighbour Katerina Cosgrove said people in the street were sick of the music.

“Everyone on the street is getting really sick of it because they didn’t buy here to be regaled with urban problems in what is a semirural area,” she said.

The nine-bedroom property is listed on Airbnb for $1308 per night.

The Sunshine Coast Daily attempted to contact the owner.

Mrs Cosgrove said the owner lived in Brisbane and rented out the property regularly.

“Last weekend there was 33 cars on the property along with tents and motorhomes,” she said.

“It’s like being at an outdoor music festival with the loudspeakers, the chanting and the drinking.”

According to the Noosa Plan 2020, a development approval is required from the council to undertake a short-term accommodation use.

Noosa Council development assessment manager Kerri Coyle said the council had written to the owner several times, requesting that the use of the property for short-term rental cease or that a development application be lodged with the council seeking approval for short-term accommodation.

“The property has no development approval to operate short-term accommodation and has no existing use rights to operate such a use from the site,” she said.

“To date no application has been lodged.

“We have advised the owner that the use of the house and barn as a party venue is not permitted.”

Mrs Cosgrove said more needed to be done.

“The police come out from Noosa generally three times a weekend to speak with the party goers so they’re sick of it and so are we,” she said.

“There’s an underlying, recurring problem that neither council or police want to deal with.”

Residents have complained to the Noosa council to better manager privately-owned holiday homes and units in March 2021.

The council introduced new rules in April saying owners must sign a statutory declaration stating the property would not be used for a party house.
