The aunty of a young man who went missing after being swept away at Teewah Beach last month says “all hope has been lost” as she raises money for his memorial.

Brisbane man Jye Mattern, 21, was swept off the popular beach about 5pm on January 21, triggering a large-scale search including helicopters and jet skis over five days.

The young man has sadly not been found.

His aunt, Nicole Gibson, launched a GoFundMe fundraising campaign for his funeral on behalf of the “totally devastated” family.

“My family are often the first to help everyone out in times of need, but are too proud to ask for help ourselves when needed,” she said.

The GoFundMe has already surpassed its target of $6000, with more than $6800 raised from 107 donations as of Friday afternoon.

Ms Gibson said the money would go towards his memorial, including a memorial plaque, and to create a charity to raise awareness of the dangers of swimming in the ocean regardless of how experienced someone might be.

“Jye was a very experienced swimmer, and this tragedy still occurred,” she said.

Ms Gibson said she also wanted to strengthen “much needed” communication sources for emergency services at beaches.

“Unfortunately, he is still classed as missing, but his brother, Zac, witnessed what happened and unfortunately all hope has been lost,” she said.
