A Coes Creek dad of two and owner of Coastside Roofing has been denied bail after being charged with a raft of offences including assault of three people and exposing his genitals at a shopping complex.
Police claim Keith Bugslag’s alleged drunken rampage on February 5, 2022, started at his neighbour’s property in Coes Creek before moving to a nearby shopping complex at Burnside.
Mr Bugslag, 41, allegedly knocked on the door of his elderly neighbour and asked to borrow his car, the court heard.
When the neighbour denied him Mr Bugslag allegedly grabbed the 69-year-old by his shirt, began shaking him and ripped his shirt.
Mr Bugslag then allegedly took his neighbour’s mobile phone and left before the “distressed” neighbour was taken to hospital.
A short time later, Mr Bugslag flagged down a man, 58, who was driving and allegedly punched him in the face and shoulder five times without warning.
The second man suffered pain to his face and shoulder and bleeding to the inside of his mouth.
Police will allege Mr Bugslag then arrived at the Foodworks Burnside complex on Coes Creek Rd and tried to take a 10-pack of premixed whiskey drinks from the Thirsty Camel bottle shop without paying.
A scuffle allegedly occurred between the staff member and Mr Bugslag that resulted in several punches to the staff member’s face.
When police arrested Mr Bugslag, he allegedly resisted, damaged the handcuffs on the police vehicle and smashed one of the car’s windows.
A day prior, on February 4, Mr Bugslag was at the same Foodworks complex in Burnside when he allegedly reversed into a stationary car and assaulted two strangers, causing a split lip to one.
Police claim he then started abusing surrounding witnesses before pulling out his penis.
The alleged incidents resulted in 11 charges against Mr Bugslag including wilful exposure, two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, robbery of the mobile phone with actual violence and assault with intent to steal.
Applying for bail on Mr Bugslag’s behalf in Maroochydore Magistrates Court, solicitor Chris Lumme said his client employed five to six people in his roofing business Coastside Roofing.
“He’s been under a significant amount of stress which he acknowledges he hadn’t properly coped with and he had taken some medication and mixed that with alcohol … he has no memory whatsoever of any of these offences,” Mr Lumme told the court.
Mr Lumme said Mr Bugslag has full time care of his two teenage daughters and has contact with his two younger children.
Magistrate Maxine Baldwin denied Mr Bugslag bail due to an acceptable risk that he would commit further offences.
Ms Baldwin said Mr Bugslag was likely “well out of control” and said the offending led to members of the public being seriously affected.
He will remain in custody on remand until April 1 for a committal mention.
