Coast venues revealed for Olympics as bid takes major step

The Sunshine Coast is set to become a major piece of the Olympic puzzle with four competition venues and an athletes' day village slated for the region.

It comes after the International Olympic Committee named Brisbane as the preferred host of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The announcement gives the Brisbane bid and the Australia Olympic Committee a 12-month window of exclusive negotiation with the committee to secure the hosting rights.

Feasibility assessment documents revealed four venues were planned for the region, including Alexandra Headland, for road cycling, marathon and race walk, while kiteboarding was also set to be held at Alexandra Headland beach.

A new Coast convention centre could host basketball matches, with a 6000-person capacity and a media centre, while the Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Park could accommodate 10,000 spectators.

Sunshine Coast Stadium was also identified as a host venue for football matches, with a 20,000-fan capacity.

An athlete day village was also set to be located at Maroochydore, with concepts showing a highly-developed new city centre.

The documents stated the Games could serve "as an accelerator to deliver long-term regional priority plans".

"Significant urban growth along transportation corridors (population growth 50 per cent by 2041) links the three primary urban centres (Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast), creating a north-south 'lineal city'," the documents stated.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said he was delighted with the overnight announcement.Cr Jamieson, who joined then-Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk in 2015 on a meeting with International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach to discuss a southeast Queensland Games, said it had been a "rollercoaster journey" to get to this point.

"When IOC President Bach and Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates met with Graham Quirk and myself as the delegates of the Council of Mayors (SEQ) in Sydney on 30 April 2015, he was incredibly impressed with the SEQ story and the power of mayors and councils working together for the advancement of their communities," Cr Jamieson said.

"Bringing the federal and state governments to the table in 2019 has only served to add to our momentum and the inherent value of what can be realised when the three tiers of government work together productively is what has helped achieve the milestone we have reached today.

"As we now push our way through the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the potential to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games can become a powerful tool in south east Queensland's economic resurgence and deliver an incredible boost to our tourism industry when it needs it the most - along with many other industries that will be important contributors to the Games supply chain.

"A successful bid had been considered a way to fast track major transport infrastructure in the region.
