Plans to build a surf park on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast have appeared before court again after a lengthy stoush in 2023.
Craig Morrison’s development entails plans to build a surf park on a 13.433ha block at 22 and 24 Johnston Rd, Glass House Mountains near the Bruce Highway.
Connor O’Meara Solicitors lodged the latest application to the Planning and Environment Court on behalf of Surf Farm Pty Ltd on December 20, 2024, with the respondents listed as Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning.
The plans were initially approved by council in 2021 alongside a second proposal for a water park with a surf pool and resort at Glenview by Sanad Capital before it was taken to court by the company, arguing it was not commercially viable to have two surf parks within 20km.
Sanad Capital’s appeal was dismissed in July, 2023, thus giving approval to both parks but the company’s development plans have since been withdrawn.
The latest application lodged to the court shows Mr Morrison’s company has since proposed to make several changes to their surf park plans.
These changes include the relocation and slight reduction in size of the wave pool as well as the removal of a smaller paddle pool.
It is also intended to relocate the car park, manoeuvring and service areas, boosting the number of car spaces from 104 to 114.
Documents show the allocation of floor space to several commercial and administrative buildings, including the bar and kitchen, ticketing booth and retail, hire and foyer space.
It has been argued the changes can be classified as “minor changes” under the Planning Act as the modifications would not result in a “substantially different development”.
The application concludes the proposed changes are appropriate for the development and should be approved.
