Yandina service station proposal takes another twist

A fight to build a controversial service station in the heart of Yandina is not over yet as a developer challenges the council’s decision to knock it back.

Developer Pearl Energy has lodged an appeal after its proposal to build a service station at Yandina was knocked back by Sunshine Coast Council.

A developer who wants to build a service station in Yandina is not giving up a bid to bring the project to life.

Pearl Energy’s proposal to build a service station and shop on the corner of Stevens and Farrell streets was knocked back by Sunshine Coast Council earlier this month.

The development had been met with anger from the Yandina community who feared it would destroy the historic look and charm of the town.

Connor O’Meara Solicitors on Monday filed a notice of appeal at the Brisbane Planning and Environment Court against the decision.

In the appeal notice, the solicitors argued the development must be approved: “given it complied with the relevant assessment benchmarks”.

“The reasons for refusal do not allege any noncompliance with the performance outcomes or acceptable outcomes in the Yandina Local Plan, Heritage and Character Areas Overlay Code, Scenic Amenity Overlay Code or Transport and Parking Code,” the notice read.

“The proposal is designed to contribute to the safety, security and vitality of the centre.

The appeal documents say the development has an “attractive and functional” design which integrates with the surrounding streetscape.

The council said the proposal did not keep with the town’s streetscape character or heritage values and detracted from nearby buildings and amenities.

“It does not follow the pattern of existing development in the Yandina local centre with buildings located towards the street,” council’s decision notice read.

There had been more than 200 written submissions from the community against the proposal.
