Making the big decisions at Sunshine Coast and Noosa councils comes with some tidy six-figure salaries.

Recently released annual reports reveal the best paid employees at the two coastal councils with elected representatives taking home a portion of what some senior executives are paid.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson was paid $228,521 last year and deputy mayor Rick Baberowski took home $158,332.

On top of his mayoral wage, Mr Jamieson received $133,667 for his role Local Government Association of Queensland president.

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart took home about $127,470 and deputy mayor Frank Wilkie received $79,669.

Sunshine Coast Councillors received salaries of $138,745 and those on the Noosa Council who oversee a smaller region received $67,718.

Their salaries were just a fraction of what some in the councils received.

The Sunshine Coast Council's highest paid employee, chief executive officer Emma Thomas, was paid between $400,000 and $500,000 – similar to Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk who has an annual income of $427,500.

Meanwhile, Noosa Council’s CEO receives between $300,000 and $400,000.

Brett de Chastel retired from the high-profile position in early November and former Australian basketballer turned businessman Larry Sengstock has been acting in the position since.

Mr Sengstock took on the position of director of infrastructure services earlier this year to oversee about $47m worth of capital projects.

But the former Olympian and Basketball Australia chief executive is standing in for the council’s top position while the recruitment process continues.

These include James Ruprai of customer engagement and planning services, Tom Jamieson – not related to the mayor – of built infrastructure, Greg Laverty of economic and community development, Warren Bunker of liveability and natural assets and Heidi Roberts of business performance.

Executive manager Brendan Hogan, director of major projects and strategic property Debra Robinson, chief strategy officer Bill Haddrill and chief of staff Craig Matheson received between $200,000 and $300,000, the report said.
