Prawn Stars opens second Queensland location at The Wharf, Mooloolaba

Seafood lovers have a new dining experience to enjoy at the Sunshine Coast after the opening of a second venue for a famous Far North Queensland stopover.

Easter long weekend a 'great big success' for the tourism industry

Two renovated prawn trawlers are the hot new locations where residents and visitors can feast on fresh seafood and drinks in Mooloolaba.

Iconic Cairns-based business Prawn Star has opened with two restored wooden trawlers seating 125 people moored at The Wharf on the Sunshine Coast.

The trawlers from Moreton Bay – formerly named Stormbird and Narmea – were renovated to be transformed into a popular dining spot.

The Sunshine Coast business has been 12 months in the making after Wharf Mooloolaba co-owner Dirk Long identified them as potential tenants when he visited Cairns.

Business owner Will Nevile said the Prawn Star at Cairns’ Marlin Marina had a solid reputation after seven years of providing a unique experience.

The licensed restaurants sell fresh local seafood, from prawns to bugs and salmon sashimi.

“We always serve fresh wild-caught, sustainable Australian seafood,” Mr Nevile said.

“We pride ourselves on creating a really informal and fun atmosphere where customers can enjoy the company of family and friends while having a cold beverage.”

He said The Wharf was the ideal location because it was right on the water and attracted up to 1.4m visitors annually.

“Prawn Star has proven to be a winner with customers from across Australia and the world because it has that lovely laid back Queensland feel while providing guests with a simple menu of fresh seafood and selected beverages,” he said.

The Wharf Mooloolaba general manager Karen Hugg said it was fantastic to see the restored trawlers come to life.

“Prawn Star is a fantastic addition to our offer here at The Wharf, it’s such a well known brand to anyone who has visited Cairns,” Ms Hugg said.

The business expects to employ up to 20 people.
