ONE of the final steps to the new Sunshine Coast Airport runway construction is nearing its groovy end.
A new method has been used for the strip, with trapezoidal grooving being implemented on the tarmac.
Since early April, a team of groovers has been cutting 49,214 trapezoidal-shaped grooves into the 2.45km stretch of runway with specialist machinery.
The grooves allow water to drain during wet weather, improving friction for landing aircraft.
A laser-guided system cuts the grooves, and four people are required to operate the machine and supporting equipment.
The specialised machine arrived on the Coast from Uluru Airport, just prior to the state border being closed due to coronavirus.
The grooving machine was set to cut the final section of runway on Thursday, weather permitting.
Sunshine Coast Council is due to hand the runway over to Sunshine Coast Airport on June 13.
