Brisbane developer wants second slice of CBD precinct

A Brisbane development company has lodged an application for its second site at the $430 million Maroochydore City Centre.

A BRISBANE development company has lodged an application for its second site at the $430 million Maroochydore City Centre.

Habitat Development Group wants to establish Corso Residences at South Sea Islander Way, a 15-storey residential and retail development.

The Maroochydore City Centre is being led by SunCentral - a development enterprise wholly owned by Sunshine Coast Council - and hinges on investors wanting to develop in the only greenfield CBD in Australia within an existing urban area.

The 20-year project allows for up to 150,000sq m of commercial and 65,000sq m retail floor space and 2000 dwellings.

Habitat Development Group has lodged a development application for its second development site within the Maroochydore City Centre, Corsos.

Habitat has applied for a 4119sq m lot which, if approved, would be the fifth building in the precinct.

Meanwhile construction will start in late July on the business's $83 million Market Lane Residences, Maroochydore City Centre's first residential building.

"The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and we see an exciting period of growth, in particular the Maroochydore City Centre, over the next five to ten years," Habitat Development Group director Cleighton Clark said.

Corso Residences would feature two towers - one with 108 apartments, a rooftop terrace, offices and a food and drink outlet and bar, and the second with 42 apartments, office and pool and recreation area.

Its other Maroochydore City Centre building is located on Mundoo Boulevard entrance.

The 14-storey Market Lane Residences will feature 146 apartments, six SOHO (small office home office) townhouses and ground-floor retail spaces.

"Despite the disruption caused by COVID-19, we're looking at our investment in the future city centre as a long-term commitment and we're very excited to be commencing the first residential buildings in the precinct at the end of next month," Mr Clark said.

SunCentral chief executive officer John Knaggs said it was important to have construction commence on site as the first commercial building within the CBD, Foundation Place, was due for completion in late September this year.

"We are also thrilled with Cleighton's commitment and confidence in the Sunshine Coast and the city centre project by securing a second site for Habitat Development Group," Mr Knaggs said.

"It's a significant shot in the arm for the project, particularly as we emerge from the impact of COVID-19 and it also reinforces our urban design and planning principles to create a vibrant city centre."
