Bruise brothers: Geraghty boys are on a mission

Reunited at the Falcons, the Geraghty brothers plan to inflict pain on the Intrust Super Cup competition as the boys target their biggest year yet.

After two successful seasons at rivals the Redcliffe Dolphins, Tom Geraghty is back in Falcons colours.

Younger brother Louis, 21, a former Junior Kangaroo, is aiming to cast aside an injury-plagued season.

Five years apart, the boys never got the chance to play together growing up, and have only run out together once as Falcons.

This season the Maroochydore Swans juniors are both eyeing off starting roles.

“We both started together, he was second row and I was lock, it was a great feeling running out next to each other,” Tom said of that only game together in 2017.

“I remember being really pumped at the chance to have each other’s back.

“We’re close, always hanging out, I am stoked to finally get to play with the little bro.”

Only once before have they been opposing players.

“I think we both say we got the upper hand of each other,” he laughed.

Louis said just having his “role model” around at training has been a huge asset for him, and the team.

“We really push each other at training and have that brotherly rivalry,” Louis said.

“I remember watching his games growing up, as an older brother I do look up to him.

“It was towards the back end of 2017, I can’t even remember the opposition, but it was really special to run out together.”

Tom, who works as an exercise physiologist, said returning to the Coast was a “no-brainer”.

Playing and training with the Dolphins, but living and working on the Coast was meaning long hours and a lot of time in his car.

Some days he’d start with his early bird clients near the crack of dawn, and not get home until after 10pm.

“Driving was a bit of a killer,” he said.

“I’m just super excited to be back, looking to have an enjoyable year and win a premiership.

“Falcons were the strongest team in the comp last year, no doubt, this year we have so much experience I know we’ll be the same force.”

New coach Sam Mawhinney’s initial plans for Tom are in strong middle rotation alongside recruit Sam Lavea, Daniel Dole and Sam Bernstom.

Captain Dane Hogan, who has just announced his re-signing, provides another option for the middle and edge.

“He (Tom) and Sam will really solidify our middle, games are won and lost there,” Mawhinney said.

“He’s such a durable character with the minutes he can play and his flexibility to play back row is a big plus.

“Louis is pretty similar to his bro. Gives us great kick pressure, inside pressure and having been in the Storm’s system, he understands that philosophy of knowing a role.”

Louis sat out last year’s pre-season with shoulder surgery and is hoping the league gods are kinder in 2020.

With his brother back in his corner, he’s one step closer to cementing his place in the Falcons run on side.

“It wasn’t good him having such a serious injury in the prime of his life, but he will fight his way back, we both will,” Tom said.

Some would say the boys are on a mission.
