A beautiful Brisbane mother has died surrounded by her devoted husband and adoring parents, after a courageous two year battle against bowel cancer.
Laura Corfield will be remembered for her inner beauty, grace, strength and kindness.
Nearly two years ago, when she was 22 weeks pregnant, Mrs Corfield was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer.
In March 2023, when she was just 35 years old, Mrs Corfield shared the raw moment her and her husband were faced with the torturous decision of choosing between her own life or that of their unborn baby’s.
Doctors told the young couple there was a real chance they would lose their unborn baby because of the cancer.
Miraculously, Porter Jones Corfield was born via caesarean on April 27 2023 at a healthy 1.9kg, at the Mater’s Mother Private Hospital.
“His name means to be a gatekeeper of your own destiny,” Mrs Corfield said last year.
On September 5, Mrs Corfield died peacefully. She leaves behind her husband, Braden Corfield, and two children, Quinn and Porter.
Mr Corfield shared the sad news online.
“It is with immense sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Laura. After a courageous 22-month battle, she left us peacefully, surrounded by myself and her parents,” he said.
“In her final moments, Laura remarked how loved she felt.
“Laura’s legacy is one of love, joy, and strength.”
Mr Corfield said she would never be forgotten.
“She touched so many lives with her positive energy and grace, leaving behind an incredible community of friends, a devoted and caring family, a loving husband and two perfect children,” he said.
“We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the profound impact your generous donations have made.
“These funds allowed Laura to watch our children grow for another two years: enabling our family to pursue all treatment options, carry out scans and put the best supports in place to spend time together, while fighting cancer for so long.
“Further donations will be set aside for our young children, Quinn and Porter, and invested in their education.
“While words cannot express the void she leaves, Laura wished to be remembered for the vibrant, tenacious, and strong woman she was.
“Thank you for your kind words, prayers and thoughts for our family.”
Last year, Mrs Corfield said she was eternally grateful for the love and support of her husband.
The couple met at a bar in Brisbane more than 14 years ago, and were married seven years ago.
“He’s been incredible and so amazing. He’s juggling running his surveying firm while also refusing to let me go to a single appointment alone,” she said.
“When I can’t get out of bed he’s cooking, cleaning and looking after our daughter.”
When first diagnosed Mrs Corfield said she hoped sharing her story would raise awareness of bowel cancer.
“I really want to spread awareness. Young people can get bowel cancer,” she said.
“Doctors said I wasn’t high risk even though my grandma had bowel cancer and it took months and months of pain and symptoms before I was tested.
“We need to be more proactive and pushing for doctors to test earlier. You’ve got to catch it before it’s too aggressive and has spread to other organs.”
