Blackflag Brewing has applied to open a new brewery at Coolum Beach’s industrial park

A group of mates whose craft beers have gained a huge following within 12 months are ready to move from their “gypsy” set up to having their own brewery.

A Sunshine Coast-brewed beer has become so popular that its “gypsy” brewers have had to find a permanent home to keep up with demand.

Blackflag Brewing’s owners want to develop a brewery at Coolum Beach after the popularity of their craft beers exceeded expectations.

The company started brewing in late 2019 out of several locations including Glass House Brewery but have struggled to keep up with demand.

Owners Steve and Geoff Barber, Ben Baker, John Coumessos, Ross Holloway and Simon Grasby have applied to Sunshine Coast Council for approval to open a brewery at Lomandra Place industrial park at Coolum.

“We intended on continuing gypsy brewing but the volume has really taken hold,” Mr Barber said.

“It’s a logical step to get our own tanks and be the masters of our own destiny.”

Their most popular drop is the Rage Against the Mainstream juicy pale ale.

A planning report lodged to the council says the company’s biggest challenge is producing enough beers.

Mr Barber said they had to stop sending supplies to Victoria and South Australia because they could not keep up.

The company has also received interest from Woolworths, BWS and Dan Murphys, the report says.

The brewery is proposed to include a tasting room, gift shop and sky deck and will be used for brewing, canning, packaging and dispatching.

The Lomandra Place block is in the medium impact industry zone and the application is code assessable – meaning it does not trigger public consultation.
