A popular Sunshine Coast festival has sent fans into a spin following a New Year’s Day post hinting a 2024 comeback may be on the cards.
The Big Pineapple Music Festival took to Instagram and Facebook on Monday to announce to followers they would “see you soon” and 2024 was “the year of the comeback”.
On Facebook, the post encouraged followers to “share your favourite Big Piney memories in the comments”.
The announcement marks the first post shared publicly on the festival’s social media platforms since 2021.
The update comes after the festival cancelled the last two years of shows, which previously took place each year during May.
The event last took place in 2021, following a 2020 hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Established in 2013, the event was an annual fixture in the fields near the giant pineapple landmark in Woombye, featuring well-known Australian artists including Peking Duk, Bliss N Eso, John Butler Trio, and Birds of Tokyo.
The Big Pineapple Music Festival won the People’s Choice Festival of the Year at the Queensland Music Awards three years in a row and was estimated to contribute between $6m and $7m to the Sunshine Coast economy annually.
In 2022, the event organiser Mark Pico told hopeful festival-goers the event would return in 2023, but it did not happen.
In a brief statement to the Daily earlier in 2023, Mr Pico acknowledged a date had not been locked in for the next edition of the festival.
“There’s no news on confirmed dates of the festival at this stage,” Mr Pico said.
“We will advise any firm updates when they become available.”
Music lovers were quick to show their enthusiasm following the posts, with comments of “finally!” and “heck yes!”
Another follower responded to the announcement “everything!! Best festival out”.
Some also commented on their favourite memories from past festivals, “that Hermitude set”, “meeting the Veronicas for the first time”.
The Big Pineapple Music Festival was contacted for comment.
