A developer has revealed it is looking for buyers for an exclusive Peregian Springs recreation club that it closed last month causing a community backlash.

Aveo shut the club at the Ridges estate on September 23, following a body corporate vote against taking over ownership.

The decision to shut caused “grief” among residents and sparked fears the unused club would become a drug den.

Aveo announced it would put the recreation club on the market via an expressions of interest campaign because the management of commercial recreation facilities was “not aligned” to its core business.

Principal body corporate chairman Roger Cook said the move did not provide any certainty for residents.

“Let’s wait and see I suppose, see what happens, see if there’s anybody interested and if there is anybody interested, what their intention is for use,” he said.

“We know the running costs are quite significant so would anyone even be interested?”

An Aveo spokeswoman said the recreation club would remain closed as the developer looked for a buyer.

Aveo development head Gary Kordic said the intention was to find a buyer that had “expertise” in the commercial operation of recreation facilities.

“We are mindful that the recreational facility is currently closed, and we intend to move forward on a swift marketing campaign and our hope is for a successful outcome as soon as possible and to provide certainty over the recreational facility’s future,” he said.

An Aveo spokeswoman said the campaign would start “in the coming weeks” and that there was not a “specific price” on the facility.

“We are seeking expressions of interest from purchasers who have expertise in the commercial operation of recreational facilities for the benefit of the wider community,” she said.
