A man who stabbed three people including an off-duty security guard in Maroochydore with a “flurry of blows” has learnt his fate in a Sunshine Coast court.
Alex Guy Jackson, 25, appeared in the Maroochydore District Court on Wednesday, October 25, where he pleaded guilty to two grievous bodily harm charges and one unlawful wounding.
The court was told Jackson was driving with his girlfriend when she began to verbally abuse a group of people who had gathered at the corner of Ocean St and Duporth Ave on October 17, 2021.
The group was not known to Jackson or his girlfriend, who is not alleged to have engaged in wrongdoing, at the time.
Crown prosecutor Alex Stark told the court the group and the couple became involved in an argument, with the group surrounding the car before Jackson pulled the car over and approached them with a crowbar.
“He exited with a crowbar, approached the group, the Crown accepts his actions at that point were reasonably necessary for self defence,” Mr Stark said.
Mr Stark told the court after striking of one the members, Jackson was put in a chokehold until “the point of unconsciousness”, before getting back inside the car.
The court was shown a video filmed by a witness to the incident where Jackson can be seen leaving the car armed with a pocket knife running after members of the group.
Mr Stark told the court two of the men stabbed had been a part of the group, while the third, an off-duty security guard, had been attending one of the victims when Jackson stabbed him in the back.
The court was told Jackson had been on parole at the time of stabbings.
Barrister Nathan Turner told the court the keys to the car had been thrown onto a nearby roof during the incident, preventing Jackson from driving away before he pursued the group with a knife.
“What you can see in the footage at least is a flurry of blows over a short duration against anyone who is in the immediate vicinity,” Mr Turner said.
District Court Judge Gary Long told the court the offences had occurred when there was “heightened emotion”, however the force used by Jackson when he left the car armed was excessive.
Jackson, who has been held in custody since the offending, was sentenced to five years behind bars and will be eligible for parole on April 23, 2024.
