At 100 years old, a Maroochy River golfer is still finding the energy to play two rounds of golf each week and thinks she knows the secret to a longer life.

Buderim resident, Mary Haddon, born in 1920, has been playing golf for more than 60 years and still enjoys the challenge it brings each week.

Ms Haddon plays every Tuesday and Thursday with the senior players and said she enjoyed every minute of it.

“It’s something I really enjoy and it’s one of the highlights of my week,” she said.

“The group I play with each round always changes which is really nice because everyone gets to know everybody else.”

Away from the golf course, Ms Haddon said the social aspect of the club was great.

“A lot of us sit for hours after we play and chat away with food and drink which is lovely.”

Ms Hadden said tennis was the sport played heavily when she was younger but made the switch to golf as she got older.

“My husband thought I would never give up tennis but after I found golf and realised it was much lighter, it was nice to see how many people my age play the sport,” she said.

“It’s the perfect alternative for anyone wanting to stay active and make friends along the way.

“I’ve been able to play hundreds of different courses and in my time I’ve finished each round with hundreds of different scores.”

Ms Haddon said she knew the secret to a long healthy life isn’t clear cut but staying active certainly helped.

“I think if you get into golf no matter your age you’re destined for a longer life,” she said.
