State’s most popular baby names by region: Oliver and Charlotte top the list

The most popular baby names in Queensland have been revealed but there’s a big difference between what Brisbane and regional parents are naming their children. SEE THE FULL LIST

OUTBACK parents prefer much more adventurous names for their newborn babies than parents living in inner city Brisbane, new data has found.

Analysis of the top 10 baby names by Queensland region has found Makayla, Savannah, Paige and Madison made an appearance on the outback list only and barely anywhere else in the state.

For boys, the same applied for traditional name choices such as Michael, Daniel and George which are only favoured in the bush and nowhere else.

Across the state, Charlotte and Oliver topped the list — appearing as number 1 in the Brisbane East, Gold Coast, Logan Beaudesert, Moreton Bay South and Townsville regions.

Between the south east and the regions there were also some different preferences, with boy’s names such as Elijah favoured in Logan, Moreton Bay and Cairns but nowhere else.

Ethan and Zara made the list on Brisbane’s southside but in no other region, while Matilda was favoured in Wide Bay, Mackay and the Darling Downs but didn’t make the cut across the rest of the state.

The Sunshine Coast appeared to be the odd region out, being the only statistical area to not have Queensland’s top two girls names feature anywhere in their top 10.

Oliver and William were popular in both the city and the bush featuring in every region’s list.

Gold Coast mum Alison Moore said she wanted a more common name for her second child after her eldest, Aaliyah, couldn’t find her name on novelty souvenirs in a gift shop.

“Personally, my eldest has quite a unique name and she couldn’t find anything at the gift shop,” she said.

“I didn’t know Oliver was the most common name on the Gold Coast … but I said if I had any more kids, I’d choose a more common name.

“I like the name Oliver because it can be shortened to Ollie, or leave it as it is.”
