Steven Miles has been accused of hypocrisy, with the Premier savaged for his indication Labor may put politics above women’s abortion rights when determining the party’s preference allocations.

Mr Miles refused to take a stand on whether Labor should preference the LNP above Katter’s Australian Party, following the minor party’s pledge to try to repeal the legalisation of abortion.

The ideological issue has dominated the second week of the state election campaign amid unrest within the LNP about current laws.

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli has pledged not to change the laws if he becomes premier on October 26, but will not say whether he would give LNP MPs a conscience vote if a Bill was introduced.

Katter’s Australian Party leader Robbie Katter is promising to test Mr Crisafulli’s authority over the LNP and move to repeal abortion during the next term of government.

Asked whether Labor should attempt to keep abortion off the agenda and defeat Katter MPs by preferencing the LNP, Mr Miles declined to say.

“Those decisions will be made seat by seat by the party, and you’ll get to see what our preferences are,” he said.

Health Minister Shannon Fentiman declared she was “terrified” of the prospect of again debating abortion.

Readers, though, took aim at Mr Miles for seeming to put politics above women’s rights.

Others, however, insisted the LNP’s position didn’t fill them with much confidence, while some said it’s time to do away with preferential voting.

WHAT YOU SAID

Labor’s a mess

Chris

This is somewhere at the very far end of desperate for Labour … 1 or 2 MP’s do not policy make.

Out of Thyme

Typical, Labor just use people as they see fit to further their own political gain. Put Labor last.

Dave

So Labor closed many maternity wards around Qld and have justified it with their termination of pregnancies? The can’t get much worse than that? Can they?

Denise

Labor will do and say whatever it takes. No wonder people call them the Liars Party

Preferential voting is a joke

Sigrid

Isn’t the Katter party getting slightly ahead of itself? Surely they should aim to win their seats back first then worry about member’s bills etc. If the far north has any sense they wont re-elect the Katters and the problem would be solved

Pending, Always Pending

Everyone should be putting Labor last after the irreversible damage they have done to this state.

JuzzyM

If the government starts messing with women’s rights, it’s going to get ugly. Just leave abortion and VAD decisions to the people involved and the experts.

RogerJ

Just get rid of preferences. More focus on preferences than being good and legitimate government.

Miles is a hypocrite!

kaboom

How are preferences going to be on Labors how to vote card? LNP last or Greens. Only then will we know the hypocrisy of Miles.

Dale

Where are all the people that jumped up and down about Crisafulli, surely they should now be jumping up and down about Miles. Putting re-election before women’s rights.

JuzzyM

If the government starts messing with women’s rights, it’s going to get ugly. Just leave abortion and VAD decisions to the people involved and the experts.

Melissa

Abortion should not be political. No excuse for men in suits to be debating this, just move on and talk about actually running Queensland instead of women’s rights.

Can’t vote LNP either

Jean-Marc

Wishy washy LNP. Put them last.

David

It’s interesting that one issue the LNP cannot really deal with has now given the ALP a strong week of campaigning!

Vested Interest

Like every election in this country – no party and no leader wins an election – those in office are simply the less revolting alternatives.

Alan

So glad I vote. Labor last, LNP second last and take it from there! Mrs M
