Key state election promises: $17.5m promised for Caloundra State High School

Labor leader Steven Miles has promised a Sunshine Coast school a new $17.5m facility if elected, while spruiking the government’s energy plan in the region.

Labor has announced it will spend $17.5m on new works at a Sunshine Coast high school, if re-elected later this month.

Premier Steven Miles, along with Deputy Leader Cameron Dick, announced the multimillion-dollar commitment to building Caloundra State High School a new hall while visiting the Sunshine Coast to reveal the government’s energy plan on Friday.

The plan will involve a new publicly-owned energy provider and legislated emissions targets.

However, the announcement was overshadowed when Caloundra MP Jason Hunt was confronted with an image on himself wearing a ‘Hitler’ T-shirt in the 80s.

Mr Hunt affirmed he did not support right-wing ideology in any shape or form.

“It’s a satirical T-shirt that was widely available in the 80s,” he said.

Tewantin Bypass set to receive $7.1m funding boost

The Queensland government has committed to a $7.1m funding boost to get the Tewantin Bypass back on track.

Transport Minister Bart Mellish announced on Monday they would spend $7.1m on a design and business case for the Tewantin Bypass, Beckmans Rd following extensive delays.

The 2024 State Budget had already committed to $1.4m on the project.

Independent Noosa MP Sandy Bolton welcomed the announcement after she asked for the bypass to be fast-tracked in June.

“With stage one (1) at the intersection of Beckmans Road and Cooroy-Noosa Road already complete, this ‘fast track’ will mean once the detailed designs and business case are completed, we can get to construction funding stage,” she said.

“This is vital as I have raised previously, given not only existing congestion, but as well the projected population increases to the south and the visitations due to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Ms Bolton said she would like to see a similar commitment from the opposition.

LNP promises $15m for Mooloolaba Rd, Sugar Rd intersection

Buderim MP Brent Mickelberg announced on Monday a $15m commitment to upgrading a major Sunshine Coast intersection, if the LNP is elected later this month.

Mr Mickelberg said the upgrade to Mooloolaba Rd and Sugar Rd would help ease the congestion in the area.

“I have been fighting for this upgrade for many years. After agreeing that the intersection needed urgent work, Labor backflipped and cut the road project’s funding due to their own budget mismanagement,” Mr Mickelberg said.
