Major laws to lock youth offenders up for longer won’t skip the usual scrutiny process Opposition Leader David Crisafulli has vowed, despite the LNP having just seven weeks before Christmas to get the changes in place.

The LNP’s strict 100 to-do list includes a promise to legislate is “Making Queensland Safer Laws”, which includes allowing judges to sentence children who commit serious crimes to the same jail time as adults, by the end of 2024.

The laws will start being drafted the week after the LNP is elected.

Under usual practice of the last parliament, bills were scrutinised by committees for about six weeks — with experts, peak bodies and other stakeholders able to pick apart the proposal for potential weaknesses.

Mr Crisafulli has promised to have two sitting weeks between being elected and the end of the year.

But that leaves just seven weeks for the laws to be drafted, introduced, scrutinised and passed.

“It will go to committee,” Mr Crisafulli said.

He did not state how long a parliamentary committee would have to scrutinise the laws, which will make significant amendments to the criminal code.
