Watch the replay of the debate between Scott Stuart - ALP, John Hathaway – LNP, Josh Schwarz – KAP, Clynton Hawks - NQ First as they go head-to-head ahead of 2020 QLD election.
Mr Stewart took on Townsville LNP candidate John Hathaway, Katter’s Australian Party’s Josh Schwarz and NQ First’s Clynton Hawks.
Bulletin editor Craig Warhurst moderated the debate which included questions submitted by readers.
Mr Warhurst said the debate covered a wide range of issues relevant to Townsville voters, including crime, jobs, health and the electorate’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The electorate of Townsville has long been held by Labor, but at recent elections, the LNP has encroached on the safe seat.
In 2012, John Hathaway – who is running again this election – secured the seat for the LNP from Labor’s Mandy Johnstone (now Thompson). But in 2015, incumbent Mr Stewart claimed the seat again for Labor. However, Mr Stewart won by less than 215 votes in two-party preferred against Casie Scott at the 2017 election.
Candidates got a to make a one minute opening pitch followed by the questions.
They also made a 30 second final pitch.
The debate was held in conjunction with The Courier-Mail, which is hosting a number of similar events in the lead up to polling day.
