Premier Palaszczuk officially calls election, touting an 'economic focus' for Labor

Annastacia Palaszczuk and Deb Frecklington will claim every day from now until polls close on October 31 that they won’t do deals to gain minority government.

Don’t believe either of them. They’re both telling fibs.

Does Frecklington, for instance, really expect Queenslanders to believe she’d eschew the chance to sit in the premier’s seat in State Parliament when the LNP has only had that opportunity twice in the past three decades?

Palaszczuk’s claim is even hard to believe given she’s backflipped before on this very topic.

“Let me make it very clear: no, no, no, no deals. Next question,” she harrumphed during the 2015 election campaign.

But then once the voting was over and the question arose as to whether she should do a deal to get Labor elected, Palaszczuk’s responded in record time “yes, yes, yes, yes!”

And does this pair really think voters will swallow their claim that they’d be willing to go to Government House and profess to Governor Paul de Jersey over cups of Earl Grey tea that they’re far too principled to do a deal with minor parties and independents?

“Soz Gov, we made a promise not to do a deal. And you know us politicians, we just gotta stick to what we say before those elections,” the conversations would supposedly go.

Yeah, right.

And do they believe His Excellency would respond with a casual “No worries ladies, we’ll just have ourselves another election and keep on bloody having them until those darn Queenslanders finally get it right”.

Unlikely.

While their claim is a crock, it’s also an affront to our democratic system for the leaders to say they won’t accept the result.

Even if they were to follow through, the Governor would tell them to go away and try harder.

The truth is that if voters do deliver a hung parliament, Palaszczuk and Frecklington will have no choice.

They’ll just have to deal with it.
