MORE than 2500 calves are up for sale at the annual George and Fuhrmann Blue Ribbon Weaner Sale today.

Sale co-ordinator Matthew Grayson said the weaners were the pick of the region.

He said the drought had forced some graziers to sell calves early, pushing down the number for sale today by nearly 500 compared to last year.

But the variety and quality of weaner on offer at Stanthorpe rivalled any other grazing region, he said.

"With the dry season this year, a few people are forced to sell (early)...they had to get the calves off the cows,” Mr Grayson said.

A number of special lines will feature, with the following breeders listing stock: Berrington Cattle Co, Michael and Jessica Smith, RS & MO Dowe "Isla”, H Reeves, Booky Cattle Co, J Egerton and Growvale Trust.

"It's always as good a quality yard there in Stanthorpe as it is anywhere,” Mr Grayson said.

"There's a good run of EU calves - that's accredited for sale in the European Union market, and there's your normal non-EU calves.

"Anyone who's looking to purchase weaners that'll do very well for them in the future should attend.

"There's something there for everyone.”

The sale is at Stanthorpe Saleyards starting at noon and wrapping up by 7pm.
