A truck driver has been charged with dangerous driving after he allegedly almost ran down a police officer in an attempt to evade a border checkpoint on the Granite Belt.
Police claim the 43-year-old ignored three requests to produce his driver’s licence at the Wallangarra border crossing just before noon on July 21.
The man allegedly became abusive and struck parts of his truck with his fists after producing two invalid Covid pass documents.
It will be alleged the driver performed a U-turn when he saw an infringement notice being issued, then drove away at speed and almost hit a police officer.
Police claim they followed the man to a New South Wales service station, where he began throwing items at officers through the driver’s seat window and refusing to get out of the truck.
The man was issued with an infringement notice at the time for failing to comply with a Covid border direction and another three for failing to produce a driver’s licence, failing to wear a seatbelt, and conducting a U-turn over a single or double white line.
He was today charged with dangerous driving and is due to appear in Stanthorpe Magistrates Court on September 22.
