The Bapaume man who tragically died in a single vehicle crash on Friday afternoon has been identified, with tributes flowing after news of his death.
Described as a “true country gentleman”, Kevin Gimm sadly died as a result of his injuries on Monday, after his car crashed into a tree on Friday afternoon at Applethorpe.
The man’s charm captivated many, with one local saying that although she only met him once, he left a major impression on her.
“His brother built our dam and enlarged another and Kev carted many truckloads of the dirt onto our driveway for free,” resident Grace Franchi said.
“That doesn’t happen everyday, does it? I admire these old school type of blokes. Everyone speaks highly of both of them.
Ms Franchi remembered a tale she once heard regarding Mr Gimm and his brother, after their fuel tanker was stolen in recent years.
“I remember a year or two back someone stole their fuel tanker,” she said.
“The community was so outraged, I think whoever stole it, dumped it as it was found. I think the thief didn’t factor in that all eyes were peeled (on them).”
Family and friends quickly took to Facebook to express their sadness at the tragic passing of the man, with one commenter saying Mr Gimm was a “true country gentleman” and that he was “sorry to hear this sad news”.
“RIP Kevin, condolences to the family,” another wrote.
At about 12.09pm on Friday, December 1, Mr Gimm was driving along Amiens Rd when his vehicle collided with a tree near the turn with Glenlyon Drive.
Mr Gimm was taken to Stanthorpe Hospital in a critical condition just after noon on Friday, and then flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday, December 4.
