Police are treating as suspicious a fire that tore through one Granite Belt home and damaged another in the early hours of Tuesday, with a man assisting police with inquiries.

Multiple fire crews battled to contain the blaze, with emergency services called to the Barawell Street home in Wallangarra at 5.20am.

“When (emergency services) arrived at the 20m x 10m house it was well alight,” the spokeswoman said.

A police spokesman said the house was “almost completely destroyed” with damage also sustained to a neighbouring home.

A crime scene has been declared with the 46-year-old male resident assisting police with investigations into the “suspicious” fire.

An ambulance spokesman said all people were out of the home when emergency services arrived.

More to come.
