Stanthorpe boy an Aussie champion

Stanthorpe teenager and former Greenlands State School student has been crowned the national javelin champion for his age.

athletics: Stanthorpe teenager and former Greenlands State School student has been crowned the national javelin champion for his age.

Angus Davey, who went to Greenlands State School for seven years and now attends Toowoomba Grammar School, travelled to Adelaide for the national titles on December 10 where he blew away his competition - despite not being able to match his own personal best.

"He didn't throw his personal best but it was enough to win,” proud mum Angela said.

He hopes to try for the title again next year.

"Angus would like to thank his coaching team at Toowoomba Grammar School.”

It's been a solid spell from the youngster, who only a month ago broke a long-standing Toowoomba record.

Davey competed for Grammar in the 100th GPS Track and Field Carnival and completely destroyed a record which had stood for 15 years in the under-15 javelin event.

The former record, which stood at 60.57 metres, was set by a competitor from The Southport School in 2002.

In a competition where throwing records are often broken by centimetres, Davey, the reigning state champion, blasted 64.77m to write himself into the record books by 4.20m.

By comparison, he threw 57.32 to win the national title.
