Sonic piece coming to town

A composition combining art and music has gone on display in Brisbane.

A COMPOSITION combining art and music has gone on display in Brisbane.

It's the brainchild of Queensland Conservatorium head of music technology DrJohn Ferguson, as well as former Stanthorpe local Paul Bardini.

Scatter is a sonic sculpture that will be part of the inaugural Curiocity Festival in Brisbane.

The festival presents a series of science, art and technology experiences spanning the Brisbane River.

Mr Bardini fabricated the parts for Scatter. The solar- powered sonic composition features spinning loudspeakers that hang from 4m-high rotors.

Growing up on a farm outside Stanthorpe, MrBardini always had a passion for making weird and wonderful objects.

After 20 years as a touring sound engineer, he decided to pursue that passion at the Queensland College of Art.

"I got tired of living out of a suitcase and I decided to go to uni and turn my hobby into a new career,” he said.

"I've been documenting each part of this project on Instagram and it's generated a lot of interest.”

The installation is on display at South Bank Parklands until April 3, before it comes to Bardini's home town for a showing at the Piano Mill at Easter.

"It is very much a collaboration and a team effort,” Dr Ferguson said.

"It's been fantastic working on something together that encompasses design, art, sculpture and music.”
