Festivalgoers can expect to be wowed at this week’s Snowflakes in Stanthorpe with a new laser light show, snow volcano making and amazing local acts to round out the three-day event.

Snowflakes in Stanthorpe president Trace Gosney said the laser lights show on Friday night before the fireworks was not to be missed.

“We’ve got different coloured lasers, patterns and snowflake designs that will be shining on Quart Pot Creek with music playing during the show,” he said.

“Rain, hail or shine we will have a great event, with plenty of activities for everyone to get involved in.”

Media co-ordinator Robyn Henderson said this year people could build their own snow volcanoes.

“Each person gets to shape their volcano and create a science experiment with bicarb soda and vinegar to produce a beautiful lava ooze,” she said.

Mrs Henderson said two new entertainment acts to look out for at the festival are Levi-X & Dad and the Nine Year Sister.

“Thirteen-year-old Levi-X is teaming up with his dad to play a wide range of songs on the saxophone. The pair won the Stanthorpe Busking Championships earlier this year,” she said.

Another welcome addition to the event is the inclusion of a bigger ice skating rink and snowfield.

“Three hundred and fifty tonnes of ice will be crushed using a snow machine to form the synthetic rink and create a snowfield for people to skate across and toboggan down,” Mrs Henderson said.

Mr Gosney said this was only possible because there was now more water available to use due to the Stanthorpe floods earlier in the year.

For the first time in the festival’s history, all of this year’s events will be run by different community groups, from the Stanthorpe Girl Guides to the Stanthorpe Pistol Club.

Snowflakes in Stanthorpe begins Friday, July 2 and continues over the weekend.
