Site future still up in the air

MORE than a year on, one of Stanthorpe's biggest facilities still lies dormant.

The old Carramar Hostel facility closed its doors and stopped operating in March last year, but no use has yet been found for the huge site in the heart of town.

Owner's, Churches of Christ Care, transitioned all staff and residents across to their new Villa Carramar site in Alice St, but the question over what to do with the site still remains unanswered.

"The old Carramar Hostel facility will no longer be used for aged care, it has served the Stanthorpe community well providing aged care accommodation for four decades,” Executive Director - Services, Churches of Christ in Queensland's Bryan Masonsaid. "The grounds are being maintained, security is in place and regular building checks take place.

"Since closing the old Carramar Hostel facility in March last year, the building has been decommissioned, existing residents and staff relocated to the Stanthorpe Aged Care Service on Alice St and we have started to talk to community representatives from local council, government, health services, support services and other agencies to glean their ideas about the future use of the site.

"Decommissioning of the old facility has included the cessation of utilities and removal and recycling of all furnishing and equipment to the Stanthorpe Aged Care Service on Alice St and to other Churches of Christ services.

"Identifying the best possible use of the site for Stanthorpe, that is sustainable for the long term, is our priority.”

"A longer-term plan requiring considerable investment and support will be required.

"We see ourselves as active members of the Stanthorpe community. When we have a clearer understanding of the potential use of the site, and any associated timeframes, we will communicate openly.”
