A SAVINA Lane white wine, billed as being better than the iconic fiano variety savoured by the Romans more than 2000 years ago, has won a trophy at the 34th annual Queensland Wine Awards.
Winery owners Brad and Cheryl Hutchings said the award for the Champion Alternative Variety White Wine acknowledged the wine's popularity and unique taste which included flavours of honey, melon, apricot and honeysuckle.
"The Romans used to drink this variety and they knew how to have a good party,” Mr Hutchings said.
"I think our wine's probably a bit better but essentially you're still getting the same flavours as they would have had.”
This is the second year their fiano has won an award "so we're very happy because we've spent years rehabilitating the fiano”, Mr Hutchings said.
This fiano was "one of the best fianos we've ever made” due to the quality of the terroir, including the soil type and microclimate.
"We're probably as organic as you get without actually being certified. We let the season play through the wine and let it happen.
"We do minimal intervention wine making so you're tasting that particular fiano from that season and from that year.
"Each season is as individual as a fingerprint.”
Other varieties produced at Savina Lane include viognier, tempranillo and graciano or shiraz.
