Man jailed for attacking drinking partner

WHEN his drinking partner turned unsavoury and challenged him to fight, a Stanthorpe man dragged him down concrete stairs by his feet and stomped on his head.

Daniel Ian Peter Holmes-Banks fronted Stanthorpe District Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court heard the victim was left with multiple facial fractures following the vicious assault.

Crown Prosecutor Jodie Wooldridge told the court 29-year-old Holmes-Banks and the victim had been drinking at the home of a mutual friend on July 7 last year and both were intoxicated.

Ms Wooldridge said the victim was asked to leave the home after he began to bother others at the property.

As he got up to leave, the victim started to "shape up" to Holmes-Banks.

The court heard that Holmes-Banks retaliated and dragged the man down the stairs and delivered repeated blows to his face, which continued even after the man was no longer able to defend himself.

The victim told police the last thing he remembers from the attack was Holmes-Banks stomping on his head.

Ms Wooldridge told the court this was not an isolated incident for Holmes-Banks, who repeatedly punched both a woman who was on her hen's night and the woman's sister in 2009.

Neither was known to him at the time of the assault.

Barrister Robbie Davies told the court the victim had since acknowledged some responsibility for the attack and did not hold any resentment toward Holmes-Banks.

Holmes-Banks was jailed for 15 months but will be released on parole after serving four months.
