EVERYDAY workers don't usually get much of a look in when it comes to awards.

While inventors, artists and captains of industry are commonly honoured, the people who do the necessary tasks of running a business are often overlooked.

Rotary has changed that with its Pride of Workmanship Awards, which asks business owners and operators to nominate employees who do a great job and whose input and involvement make their life so much easier.

Eight recipients received awards at a special ceremony held on Monday night at Queensland College of Wine Tourism:

Marjella Stevens is an Early Years officer at Granite Belt Neighbourhood Centre. She was commended for relaunching the Early Years Program that supports and assists vulnerable families with children aged under five years.

Her employer stated: "She has a kind and generous nature and embodies and demonstrates the importance of children in our families and our community.”

Kelly McCosker has worked for Cherry Lane Nursery since January 2014 when the business changed hands. She was described as "an integral link between the previous and new owners, having a connection to both parties, and helped to ensure a smooth transition to the new management.”

A year ago, after a key employee retired, Kelly stepped into a new role of assistant manager.

Destiny Hall was commended for her work at Country Style Caravan Park, where after starting as a fill-in cleaner 10 months ago she was quickly promoted to head housekeeper. Her employer said while it was a responsible position for a young person, Destiny "had exceeded all our expectations”.

Jeanece Morris, a cleaner at Queensland College of Wine Tourism, was praised for "taking a lot of pride in her work”. Her employer commented they often received positive feedback on the cleanliness of the college and said it was "definitely due to Jeanece's hard work”.

Colleen Jerrett is pack house manager for Kool Country Packers, responsible for the supervision of packing staff and quality assurance checks. Her employer happily noted that "she has probably never had a day off during her employment” and "she treats the workplace as if it were her own”.

James Boston, a boilermaker and fabricator at Taylor Family Produce, was praised for his "amazing ability and craftsmanship” and for "completing every job with passion”.

Irrigation specialist Anthony Cannovo, also at Taylor Family Produce, was recognised for his knowledge of his work and "helping his fellow teammates when needed and always with a huge smile”.

Mark Lanza has worked at Speranza Mobile Welding for 18 years and was recognised for his exceptional work. His employer noted he was "never afraid to undertake any job placed upon him” and was "a great asset to our company”.

The awards were presented by Mayor Tracy Dobie and MP James Lister was guest speaker.
