Mother’s Day is a special day for many Stanthorpe mothers, grandmothers and motherly figures, for Debbie Wilmot this day has particular significance.
Mother’s Day is a day Mrs Wilmot dedicates to her late mother and grandmother.
“Each year I go to the Stanthorpe Cemetery and place a bouquet of ‘forever roses’ on my mother and grandmother’s grave,” she said.
“Your mum’s forever in your heart whether she’s with you or not.”
The Stanthorpe mother has been going to the cemetery for 34 years to visit her mother who passed away when Mrs Wilmot was 23 years old.
Her message to her mother remains true each visit.
“I say ‘I love you and am always thinking of you’,” she said.
The Gracious Giving store owner coined the name “forever roses” to signify that love is everlasting and the roses represent the love her mother Janice Pettiford had for flowers.
The mother of three said since becoming a mother herself her Mother’s Day tradition is having a “big family get together”.
“We have a meal at night time with all the mothers, aunties and grandmas,” the Stanthorpe mother said.
Mrs Wilmot is looking especially forward to this Mother’s Day as it is her first as a grandmother of a boy.
“My precious little two-month-old grandson Jaxson will be there this year,” she said.
Mrs Wilmot has one other grandchild, five-year-old granddaughter Lilly, who she said she “absolutely adores”.
The store owner said she will be selling bouquets of six “forever roses” for Mother’s Day at her shop, Gracious Giving.
