CHURCHES of Christ has explained its reasoning behind dumping almost a whole facility's worth of equipment into skip bins after angered residents took the organisation to task on social media.
Nearby residents watched on last Thursday as the old Carramar facility on College Rd was cleaned out, with a significant amount of the items tossed in the trash.
'Shameful', 'a waste', 'disgusting', were just some of the choice words people had for the large-scale clear out.
Many suggested the items could have gone to better use. Churches of Christ has confirmed that that's what's happened to quite a number of their old furniture items - but not all.
"Decommissioning of the old Carramar Hostel facility included recycling of furniture and equipment to the Stanthorpe Aged Care Service on Alice Street and to other Churches of Christ services wherever possible,” a Churches of Christ spokeswoman said.
"As well as the aged care service on Alice Street, we were able to support vulnerable people and families in our Housing Service. There were no items sold and if they were suitable for reuse, they were donated.
"There was no equipment, furniture for sale - everything that could be recycled/reused was donated.
"Careful consideration was given to disposal of items that remained on-site. Any furniture, equipment or furnishings that remained on the Carramar Hostel site were no longer serviceable.
"The beds that were disposed of recently were either damaged or were no longer suitable for use.
"There was also some furniture that had been relocated from other Churches of Christ services to the Carramar Hostel site which was not able to be recycled, and was also disposed of.
"There remains some heavy plant equipment on-site.
"It is important that Churches of Christ has confidence in any furniture or piece of equipment supplied to others, either by way of donation to individuals, community agencies or to other Churches of Christ services, and that they pass all safety checks.”
