IN times of crisis and emergency, the importance of keeping our region fully informed is paramount.

Our local journalists work long hours to cover the stories that really matter, even over the summer holiday period when many others are taking a break.

When there are major disasters, like fires and floods, the information that news websites convey can literally save lives. Stories providing critical safety information on our websites are free.

But the stories behind the stories - the real human insights - are for our subscribers only. Local subscribers help fund the vital work that we do.

This week we launched a Premium online subscription model to the best local journalism, as well as state and national news.

With this, we enter a new era.

One where we renew our commitment to bring you stories about people you know, to expose wrongdoing and hold decision makers accountable, to help grow your connection with your community, and to document our region's history.

But we need your support.

Your subscription will help to fund the stories that really matter to our local community.

Without you, many of them would never be told.

We take our responsibility to you seriously.

For the introductory price of just $3 a week, you will get access to all local news, state news and a national news feed.

And in supporting us, for the price of a coffee, you join more than 100,000 others who have already become subscribers to what is Australia's best value news subscription deal.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Under Premium, you will see more articles with a rainbow coloured plus sign next to them.

This means the story is available to subscribers only.

But any story without a plus sign is able to be read for free.

FAQ: Your questions answered

WHAT DO I GET?

You get to read everything happening in your town and the wider region, as well as the best in state and national news, business and sport from our sister titles The Courier Mail and The Daily Telegraph, and much more.

Not only does your subscription give you full access to your local website, but also News Corp major metropolitan and regional titles, including The Courier-Mail, The Daily Telegraph, Melbourne's Herald-Sun, NT News, the Gold Coast Bulletin, Cairns Post, Townsville Bulletin and Hobart Mercury to name a few.

That give you access also to News' hugely popular SuperCoach competition via your state website, as well subscriber rewards worth hundreds of dollars each year.

As a subscriber, you'll see fewer intrusive ads on our site - we've rolled out even more improvements for subscribers that will make our site cleaner, easier to read and faster to load.

WHAT ELSE?

Please note, this does not affect your newspaper, which will continue to come out as normal.

Classifieds and real estate listings online will remain free to access. But the best stories about our people will be under the Premium banner.

Check out the subscription offer here or phone our subscriptions team on 1300 361 604 Monday to Friday, 8am - 5pm (AEST)

Thank you for supporting local journalism that matters. We're for you.
