A premium parcel of inner-city real estate has been sold off to a private Brisbane Catholic college by the State Government, despite a neighbouring state school bursting through its student capacity.

A PREMIUM parcel of inner-city real estate has been sold off to a private Catholic college by the State Government, despite a neighbouring state school bursting through its student capacity.
St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, has purchased the multimillion-dollar 5357sq m site at 184 St Pauls Terrace after “lengthy negotiations”, with the property listed for sale in October last year.

Meanwhile, Brisbane Central State School – which is closer to the sold site – has seen a student boom, with enrolment numbers climbing more than 50 per cent in just four years.
Despite the school’s most recent maximum student capacity being listed at 380, 413 enrolments were recorded in February.
BCSS is among 35 existing state schools slated under the Government’s Building Future Schools Fund, which is“taking into account current enrolments, growth projections, infrastructure needs and site constraints”.
The property at St Pauls Terrace had previously been used by Queensland Health.
St Joseph’s College principal Dr Michael Carroll told the school community about the purchase via a letter this week, saying it would “support future generations of Terrace students”.
“The purchase of 184 St Pauls Terrace is an exciting outcome for the students, staff, and parents, now and into the future,” Dr Carroll said.
The site would be used for services, sport and cultural programs, and allow works on a new library and STEM facilities at the school’s main campus to be completed sooner.
The Courier-Mail understands contracts have been exchanged between the two parties but settlement is yet to be finalised.
Savills real estate agent Mark Dann said hundreds of inquiries and multiple offers were received for the property.
