Southeast fire updates: Crews remain at Sunshine Coast blaze

Campers from a site on North Stradbroke Island have been as a grass fire – one of a number active in the state’s southeast – worsens. Multiple fire crews are also on scene at a bushfire burning on the Sunshine Coast, with residents advised of road closures.

CAMPERS on North Stradbroke Island have been evacuated from Main Beach and bookings for the grounds suspended as a grass fire worsens.

Main Beach has been closed south of Alfred Martin Way and Fisherman’s Track has also been closed.

Redland City Council have put an extensive fire ban in place and will hold a community meeting tomorrow informing residents of further threats to townships.

Residents are encouraged to pay attention to the latest alerts issued by the council as the fire threat steadily increase.

Additional emergency services are on standby to assist with the evacuation and map the fire’s spread.

Thick smoke has clogged the air and has reduced quality and visibility, a council spokesperson said.

Elsewhere, Multiple fire crews are on scene at a bushfire burning on the Sunshine Coast.

The fire is burning on the western side of Kawana Way Link Road, the northern side of Caloundra Road and the eastern side of Honey Farm Road, at Caloundra near Little Mountain.

Kawana Way Link Road was closed in both directions this morning between Caloundra Rd and Creekside Blvd.

The fire is burning within containment lines and is posing no threat to property at this time, a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said.

Firefighters will work to strengthen containment lines throughout the day.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service warned smoke was affecting Buderim, Sippy Downs, Mountain Creek and surrounding areas.

Residents are asked to close windows and doors and if suffering from a respiratory condition, keep medications close by. Motorists should drive with caution and to conditions.

It comes after an emergency declaration relating to a large grass fire burning on the Sunshine Coast has been revoked.

The emergency declaration was made under the Public Safety and Preservation Act about 12.10am as a large grass fire was burning in the Little Mountain.

The declaration encompassed the boundaries of Kawana Link Road to the west, Caloundra Road to the south, Parklands Boulevard to the east and Meridan Way to the north.

The fire is no longer posing a threat to homes and the declaration was revoked at 2.48am.

Bushfire at Oxenford

Meanwhile residents of North Stradbroke Island have been urged to stay informed of a bushfire on the island.

As of about 11.20am the bushfire was in the vicinity of Eighteen Mile Swamp, south of Alfred Martin Way, near Main Beach.

There was no threat to properties.

Also in the southeast, two large fires burning in the Gold Coast hinterland took hours for firefighters to get under control.

Wongawallan and Oxenford residents were issued a notice to prepare to leave just before 5pm.

The Wongawallan blaze was under control by 5.30pm, while the Oxenford fire was finally deemed under control just before 7pm.

The southeast blazes come as more than 100 fires continue to burn this morning across the state.

The worst are considered in central Queensland, with residents of several communities urged to flee their homes.

Hot, dry conditions are again expected today. Authorities have described today’s expected conditions as “concerning” but not catastrophic as in previous days.
