South East Queensland petrol prices set to skyrocket over $2 a litre

Motorists have just a few days to fill up before petrol prices surge past $2 a litre. Here are the cheapest deals on offer in Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich today.

Unleaded petrol prices set to exceed $2 a litre

Brisbane motorists have just a few days to fill up their tanks before petrol prices are predicted to reach “astronomical” levels during the next fuel cycle.

Unleaded 91 prices are tipped to surge past $2 a litre this month as conflict in Ukraine puts pressure on supply, according to Compare the Market.

Russia is the world’s second largest crude oil exporter behind Saudi Arabia and a number of major traders including BP and Shell have already put a halt on purchases.

This has sent the crude oil price skyrocketing to record highs, according to Compare the Market’s Sarah Orr.

Petrol prices are set to surge past $2 a litre in coming days.

But Ms Orr said motorists in Brisbane could take advantage of some lower prices now.

“Motorists still have some time to shop around before cheaper deals disappear across the wider region,” Ms Orr said.

“The average price for Unleaded 91 in Brisbane is currently sitting at about $1.80 but it’s destined to get a lot worse in the coming weeks.

“There is no sign yet of the next price cycle, however it must be imminent. It’s expected the new peak will break records, surpassing $2.10 a litre.

“These prices are especially startling while the lows of 2020 are still quite fresh in our memory.

“We encourage motorists to use fuel comparison apps like the Simples App to find better deals now before they start to disappear.”
