WHILE the plight of young people in the real estate market gets plenty of coverage, one young South Burnett couple has managed to break the mould.

Phil and Rebecca Cooke recently finalised the settlement on their first home on Banksia Dr in Kingaroy.

Phil said he would advise any house hunters to take a look at the South Burnett.

"It's a way to get a foot in the door," he said.

"It's an affordable way to buy your first or second house."

He's not alone in promoting the benefits of buying in the South Burnett.

According to the Queensland Market Monitor report, the region is the second most affordable for houses on land larger than 2400 square metres at a median price of $260,000 after the North Burnett.

South Burnett was also identified as the most affordable in regards to land prices with properties larger than 2400sq m selling at a median price of $60,000 and smaller properties selling for around $35,000.

Phil, 27 and Rebecca, 20, had been looking for a house for a few months and renting for a year before that.

They bought their three-bedroom, two-bathroom, 250 sq m house for about $300,000.

Rebecca estimated a similar house in Toowoomba would go for about $500,000, while in Brisbane it would be up around $750,000.

"Depending on which suburb you go to, it gets ridiculous," Phil said.

Phil works as an electrician and Rebecca is a nurse, and they said newcomers to the South Burnett might find it more difficult to break into the market.

"We've got the lives and the house," Phil said.

"Out here, if you're looking to buy, trying to find full time work if you're coming here for the first time can be a challenge."

While they have no plans to sell any time soon, they said they would keep an eye on the market to ensure the got the best return on their investment.

"We haven't really thought that far ahead," Phil said.

"when we're looking to sell, we'll keep a closer eye on the market then."
